Materials and Finishes

Sara Wise Design Materials and Finishes

Thoughtful juxtapositions of the highest-quality materials are the foundation of each design. Sara blends traditional methods of carpentry, joinery, metalworking, and craft with a contemporary aesthetic to create durable pieces that will stand the test of time. Her extensive knowledge about the unique properties of the woods, metals, glasses, and resins in her palette informs every gesture in the design process.

Sara avoids the use of commercial veneers that are thin and prone to chipping. Instead, she personally hand-picks solid lumber for each piece and either shop-cuts thick veneers or builds the piece of solid construction. These shop-cut veneers are up to eight times thicker than commercial veneers and are thus less prone to damage; they may be sanded and refinished to extend the life of the piece.

The focus on durability is a key component of a sustainable design strategy. Green finish options and recyclable materials are offered as well. Sara will work with you to choose the best materials for your particular project; a wide range of materials are available for custom work beyond what is represented here.

Metals

*Note: Pitted plate is a Premium Finish and is subject to availability.

Pitted plate and Mill plate textures are created by nature and shall therefore be somewhat unpredictable in terms of intensity of texture or pattern.

The mirror-finish of ‘Mirror Polished Stainless’ (not shown, please see the Intersect Bench and Console) cannot be easily represented here. Please contact a showroom representative to view a sample.

Because photo reproductions can vary, we cannot guarantee an accurate color match to what is shown here. Please contact one of the showroom representatives for physical samples to confirm textures, patterns, and colors of our finishes.

We blacken steel by a chemical process that is affected by the inherent properties of the steel and its unique surface texture that comes from the way in which it is produced. Please note that exposure to the air and light can also cause the tone of these finishes to change (usually darken slightly) over time. Subtle changes in tone within our strict tolerances shall be allowed.

Wood is a natural material with inherent color and grain variations that can impact overall appearance; a material’s natural grain and color will influence stain acceptance, etc. Also note that exposure to light, heat, and changes in humidity can alter the final appearance of a piece over time.

White Oak

*Note: White Oak is a Premium Finish in either quarter-sawn or rift-sawn and is subject to availability.

Quarter-sawn White Oak often has a characteristic ‘fleck’ pattern running at an angle to the dominant grain of the wood (see “Bleached” image above).

If you prefer to have a straight grain without this ‘fleck’ pattern overlay, please be sure to specify rift-sawn.
