Care and Maintenance

Sara Wise Design Products

We select only premium materials and finishes for our furniture. We take pride in working to ensure that not a single component of anything we produce could be built to a higher standard of material, craft, or finish quality.

Wood is hand selected and cut deliberately for its inherent characteristics of color and grain variation, which add to its natural beauty. As no two trees are alike, each furniture piece takes on its own character. Wood’s natural color and grain variations can impact overall appearance and a material’s natural grain and color will influence stain acceptance, etc. Also note that exposure to light, heat, and changes in humidity can alter the final appearance of a piece over time.

Steel is selected from manufacturers we know to have strict quality standards for surface finish and strength. We blacken steel by a chemical process that is affected by the inherent properties of the steel and its unique surface texture that comes from the way in which it is produced. In this way, no two steel pieces will be exactly alike. Please note that exposure to the air and light can also cause the tone of these finishes to change (usually darken slightly) over time. Subtle changes in tone within our strict tolerances shall be allowed.

Environment

Furniture is best maintained at room temperature (between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit) with a relative humidity between 35% and 40%. Avoid placing furniture near heat or air-conditioning outlets, humidifiers, replaces, or space heaters. Exposure to extreme temperature variations can damage furniture. Notify us if you intend to move your new furniture to a much drier or more humid climate. We may be able to address needs for extreme environments in the construction of your piece if we are given ample notice. Likewise, feel free to contact us for advice on moving your existing Sara Wise Design pieces if you need to relocate them to more extreme climates.

Continuous exposure to direct sunlight should be avoided. Ultraviolet rays can create cracks, yellowing, fading, or darkening of finishes over time. Take care to arrange furniture away from direct solar exposure or use window treatments to control it.

Protecting Your Furniture

We use only the highest quality materials and finishes to ensure durability. We believe they are the ideal balance of durability and aesthetic, allowing the natural beauty of the materials to shine through. If properly cared for, they will last many years. Additionally, they are – in many cases – repairable should any inadvertent damage occur. We recommend the following to keep your piece as beautiful as possible, for as long as possible:

  • Use felt pads underneath lamps and accessories to prevent scratching on the surface of your furniture.
  • Use coasters under hot or cold beverages.
  • Use insulative trivets to protect the table top from hot plates and serving dishes – even pizza boxes can damage finishes.
  • Try to lift objects instead of dragging or sliding them to prevent scratching.
  • Periodically move desktop or other semi-permanent textures such as lamps to allow the finish to breathe and prevent possible
    color variation from solar exposure.
  • Avoid leaning back on the back legs of dining room chairs.
  • Avoid pressing one’s weight into a table to rise from it – especially if it is a pedestal or trestle table.
  • Avoid placing anything hot directly on any wood surface. If this does happen and your furniture mars or ‘clouds’, seek the help of a furniture repair specialist.
  • Sara Wise Design is not responsible for damage to pieces after delivery.
  • If you have leaves for a table stored in a dark location, try to periodically bring them out into natural light to minimize color differences between them and the rest of the table.

Cleaning and Caring for Your Furniture

The high quality of our finishes should make cleaning and caring for your furniture surfaces very easy.
To Clean and Condition Wood and Blackened Steel Finishes:

  • Please use only a clean, soft, lint-free cotton cloth such as an old t-shirt.
  • Moisten the cloth slightly with warm (not hot) water and wipe the surface in the direction of the wood grain. Do not let any moisture remain on the wood or metal surfaces.
  • Only if necessary, dilute a small amount of a mild (pH-neutral) cleaner such as Palmolive or a similar hand-washing dish soap on your moist cloth. Again, dry immediately.
  • Do NOT use any products that contain silicon or heavy waxes (such as Pledge) on your WOOD finishes as they can damage the finish and create a waxy build-up.
  • Periodically rub Howard’s ‘Feed ’N Wax’ Orange Oil product (delivered with your piece if it includes blackened steel parts) onto your blackened-metal finishes to maintain their luminosity. Do NOT rub this product on your wood or stainless steel finishes (despite what it says on the bottle!)

Polished Nickel Care:

  • Use a mild and neutral house detergent (pH-neutral) such as Palmolive to make a dilute solution. Apply and wash with a soft cloth, rinse, and dry immediately. Do not use excessive amounts of solution. Do not use any harsh chemical cleaners – especially those that are ammonia based – as these products may cause discoloration.
  • For occasional dust removal and prevention, use a high-quality paste wax or Howard’s ‘Feed ’N Wax’ Orange Oil product. Saturate a small pad of cloth and wipe on. Let stand for a few minutes, then buff out with a clean, soft, and lint-free cloth.

Stainless Steel Care:

  • Use a mild and neutral house detergent (pH-neutral) such as Palmolive to make a dilute solution. Apply and wash with a soft cloth, rinse, and dry immediately. Do not use excessive amounts of solution. Do not use any harsh chemical cleaners – especially those that are ammonia based – as these products may cause discoloration.
  • You may also use an oil-based cleaner, such as Ball Stainless Steel Cleaner. However, take care with such cleaners as they can stain adjacent materials such as wood and stone.

Moving and Installing Your Furniture

  • Many of our pieces have heavy steel base components with wood tops. Moving these pieces by lifting from their wood tops risks damage to them. Please seek professional help with moving your pieces. Move pieces by their bases, separate the top from the base where feasible for moving, and use furniture dollies or glides wherever possible. Sara Wise Design is not responsible for damage to pieces that have been improperly handled after delivery and customer’s receipt.
  • Our pieces can reach weights of several hundred pounds. Please seek the help of professional movers when moving one of these pieces to avoid injury. Sara Wise Design is not responsible for injuries sustained moving our pieces.
  • Pieces at risk of overturning during seismic events should be anchored to the wall. Sara Wise Design will work with you to design anchoring systems as desired to elegantly anchor your piece to the wall. These systems are designed to minimize the risk of overturning or at least delay it during seismic events. Sara Wise Design cannot however, guarantee that the pieces will be undamaged or remain upright during all seismic events as such events are unpredictable and we are not responsible for the construction of the structure to which you are anchoring your piece. Sara Wise Design is not responsible for improper installation of anchors by others. Please follow best emergency protocols for finding a safe spot away from heavy objects (including large/heavy furniture pieces), glass, etc. to protect and shelter yourself during seismic events.
