Sara’s work in furniture design is a natural extension of her architectural background and education. Having worked in both Landscape Architecture and Architecture firms since the mid-1990s, Sara has been designing in the various scales of the built environment for almost twenty years.
Sara earned her Master of Architecture degree from the University of Washington in Seattle. She studied architectural design abroad in both Italy and Scandinavia. These broad-based educational experiences exposed her to a varied palette of architectural styles, historical periods, and materials and crafts. This exposure has allowed her to skillfully design creative interventions on projects ranging from traditional, to Pacific Northwest contemporary, to mid-century modern.
Special emphasis is placed upon the integration of interior and exterior spaces. Projects begin with a thorough site analysis; the natural environment is often critical to the design of the interiors. Views, needs for privacy, and garden spaces inform the design, as functional programming of the interior spaces and zones are laid out. Transparency, translucency, and opacity at the transition between inside and out are carefully considered.
For Sara, a sustainable approach to architecture is an inherent and integral part of the process. This approach begins with appropriately siting the building to capitalize on natural solar and ventilation considerations and stretches through to finish selections. Wherever possible, passive strategies for heating and cooling are integrated into the design, and new technologies are utilized to further insure an efficient use of energy and materials. Sara’s furniture work gives her special expertise in materials and finishes, making it easy for her to source sustainable materials and recommend appropriate low-VOC or water-based finishes wherever possible.
Her specialized work in high-end custom residential architectural design allows her to layer her skills as a master of detail with her ability to create dynamic, comfortable, and functional spaces. Sara enjoys creating a home for her clients, not simply designing a house for them. She works hand-in-hand with clients to insure that their input is front-and-center, transforming their needs and desires into a comprehensive and cohesive design strategy. Whether she’s working on a small bathroom remodel, an upper-level addition, or a new construction home, she’s fully engaged in maximizing the use of space, considering every detail, and specifying the most appropriate materials and fixtures.
The warm contemporary aesthetic of her furniture design crosses into her architectural design as she designs integral functional details into the architecture: unique custom built-ins, hardware, and lighting solutions that elevate the quality of the space. The material palette of her furniture collection is utilized in the architecture, creating the perfect environment for the display of clients’ distinctive art collections and furnishings.
